Dairy Free Hot Chocolate

With all this cold weather, it's just a matter of time that my son will be asking for some hot chocolate. Years ago, I "discovered" a great recipe. Ready!? Here it goes!

1 cup rice milk heated- either on the stovetop or via microwave
chocolate syrup-(most brands do not have any dairy in it, but Always check your labels for yourself).

Pour heated rice milk in a mug, add chocolate syrup to taste, stir! Voila, easy hot cocoa! Add a candycane for a little holiday fun!

Want to do away with the additives found in store bought syrup. Here is a great recipe to make your own. It's easy, go ahead try it :)

This recipe is from The Tightwad Gazette (go ahead and laugh at the name, my husband does until he realizes how much I save him!;) by Amy Dacyczyn.

1/2 cup cocoa powder
1 cup water
2 cups sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. vanilla
Mix cocoa and water in a saucepan. Heat and stir to dissolve the cocoa. Add the sugar then stir to dissolve. Boil for three minutes over medium heat. Be careful not to let it get too hot and boil over! Add the salt and the vanilla. Let cool. Pour into a clean glass jar and let cool. Yields 2 cups.

  1. Sounds yummy. A really really lazy way to make dairy free hot chocolate is to take chocolate soy milk & microwave till hot. We like to do this on cold mornings with breaskfast before school

  2. Thanks Allergy Mum, I'm not big on using soy but I bet the same could be done with chocolate rice or almond milk, I just don't keep it on hand much!

  3. Hey Jen, love the blog. So jealous of the new barn. Take a look at mine at
